The Day of the Jackal

Switzerland is an offstage financial hub in the Jackal’s preparations, linking money moved from Beirut to the payment conditions governing his assassination contract. Its importance lies less in a described landscape than in its role as a discreet destination for funds.

Financial Transfer

After spending two months in Lebanon, the Jackal arrives at London Airport relaxed and fit. During that stay he has supervised the transfer of a handsome sum from a bank in Beirut to another in Switzerland. The account does not identify either bank or specify the sum, but the transaction places Switzerland within the international financial network supporting his work.

Payment Terms

In setting out the terms of his operation, the Jackal gives his employers the name of his bank in Switzerland. He will move only when the first $250,000 has been deposited or when he is fully ready, whichever comes later. The condition protects his control over the timetable: payment is necessary, but it does not entitle his employers to hurry or direct him.

Narrative Function

Switzerland connects the earlier transfer supervised in the Jackal’s absence from London with the later, explicit deposit condition. The novel supplies no Swiss address, bank identity, or scene of a transaction being completed. Instead, the country appears through financial arrangements and thresholds: money can move across borders, while the Jackal keeps his whereabouts and operational plans concealed.
